NYC Opens Full-Service LGBT Center for Seniors; Will Help Seniors with Health, Meals, Technology

New York City is opening what the city's officials are billing as the nation's first full-service center for seniors who identify themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT), the Associated Press website reports today (March 1, 2012).

City officials say the new LGBT facility will be specifically geared to the needs of this segment of the population, whose members sometimes feel isolated from other seniors. The center -- to be located in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood -- will open in January.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg says it's time to change the "one-size-fits-all" approach that has traditionally shaped senior centers.

The new facility will serve LGBT seniors in the city's five boroughs, helping them with everything from health and wellness to meals and technology.
