McCain Calls for US to Lead Airstrikes on Syria; Says US Has Moral Obligation to Force Out Assad

Sen. John McCain today (March 5, 2012) became the first senator to call for airstrikes against Syria, saying President Barack Obama has taken too soft a stand against President Bashar Assad and his brutal crackdown on his own people, the New York Daily News website reports.

From the Senate floor today, McCain said the United States has a moral and strategic obligation to force out Assad and his loyalists.

"The only realistic way to do so is with foreign airpower," McCain concluded.

More than 7,500 people have been killed in Syria by Assad's troops, since Syrians began to demonstrate for the ouster of Assad in March 2011.
