Court Orders Museum Return Nazi-Seized Art; Posters Worth Up to $21M Go to Owner's Son

The France 24 website reports today (March 18, 2012) that Germany's top federal appeals court ruled on March 16 that a Berlin museum must return thousands of rare posters to an American man -- part of his Jewish father's unique collection -- that had been seized by the Nazis during World War II.

The Federal Court of Justice in Karisruhe confirmed Peter Sachs, 74, was the rightful owner of the posters collected by his father, Hans, and ruled he is entitled to receive them back from the German Historical Museum.

The court said that if the museum kept the posters -- which have been estimated to be worth up to $21 million -- it would be akin to perpetuating the crimes of the Nazis.

Peter Sachs -- who now lives in Nevada -- said of the court ruling: "It feels like vindication for my father, a final recognition of the life he lost and never got back."

Roadside Indigenous Giants Attract Passersby Vernacular Photograph Antique American Indian Art

If I had worked two months or so on a blanket to sell at this shop, it would certainly be disheartening to drop it off for my puny commission. Although it did literally take from 2 months to a year for a Navajo rug to be produced, or created rather...as that seems far more appropriate...the going "rate" around 1850 was fifty dollars. Today, a well-made rug may be worth $400 or more. Still, way too cheap. The examples here, if you can get past the visitors and their insulting big friends, look like nice ones to me.

Al-Qaida Kills American Teacher in Yemen Today; Viewed Language Teacher as Christian Missionary

The Voice of America News website reports that a Yemeni militant group -- affiliated with al-Qaida -- says it shot and killed an American teacher in southern Yemen today (March 18, 2012) for preaching Christianity.

Militants riding a motorcycle shot the man in his car in the southern city of Taiz, because they believed he was a Christian missionary.

Yemeni officials say the American had been working at a European-run language institute.

Authorities launched an investigation to find the perpetrators of the attack.

Belarus Executes Two Men Due to Metro Bombing; EU, Human Rights Groups Slam Savage Shootings

The Guardian (British) website reports today (March 18, 2012) that the European Union (EU) and several human rights groups have strongly condemned the execution of two young men in Belarus, following their conviction for a deadly attack on the Minsk metro last April that killed 15 people.

Vladislav Kovalyov and Dmitry Konovalov -- both 26 -- were put to death late last night. In Belarus, execution is performed by a gunshot to the back of the head.

Belarus president, Alexander Lukashenko -- described as "Europe's last dictator" by former U.S. secretary of state Condoleezza Rice -- had rejected pleas for clemency from the EU.

Thorbjorn Jaglan -- secretary general of the Council of Europe -- said, "Belarus is the only country in Europe which still executes people."

Review Film Safe House

Rabbi, 3 Children Shot Dead at Jewish School; Shooter in France "Shot Everything He Could See"

The Yahoo News website reports that a shooter opened fire on a Jewish school in Toulouse, France this morning (March 19, 2012) -- just as students arrived -- killing four, including a 30-year-old rabbi and his two children.

The shooter -- who arrived and fled from the Ozar Hatorah school on a motorcycle -- "shot at everything he could see," according to local prosecutor Michel Valet.

The dead included Rabbi Jonathan Sandler -- who taught at the school -- his 3- and 6-year-old sons Gabriel and Arieh, and the school headmaster's 8-year-old daughter.

A 17-year-old and two other students were seriously wounded.

High Court Rules Against Campus Christian Clubs; Accepts Lower Court Ruling of Const. Not Violated

The One News Now website reports that the U.S. Supreme Court today (March 19, 2012) refused to hear an appeal from Christian groups that challenged a discrimination policy at California state universities.

By refusing to hear the case, the Supreme Court left in place a federal appeals court ruling that found that the policy does not violate the Constitution.

The policy says officially recognized campus groups cannot discriminate based on religion or sexual orientation.

A Christian fraternity and a sorority -- both from San Diego State University -- sued hn 2005, arguing that the policy violates their religious freedom. The groups are restricted to Christian members.

Convicted Brooklyn Rabbi Loses in Court Appeal; Rabbi Balkany Tried to Scam $4M in Donations

The New York Post website reports that a Manhattan appeals court today (March 19, 2012) upheld the conviction of a crooked Brooklyn rabbi for trying to shake down billionaire Steve Cohen's hedge fund with phony allegations of inside trading.

The U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously rejected Rabbi Milton Balkany's claim that jurors should have been allowed to consider if he was entrapped.

Balkany, 65, is currently serving four years in a federal prison in Miami for trying to scam $4 million in donations to his financially strapped Bais Yaakov Jewish girls' school.

Defense lawyer Paul Shechtman said, "Rabbi Balkany accepts the court's ruling."

Over 900 Women Die in Pakistan "Honor Killings;" Some 600 Women Killed Due to "Illicit Relations"

The Christian Broadcast Network website reports today (March 23, 2012) that -- according to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan's (HRCP) annual report -- more than 900 women died last year in so-called "honor killings" in predominantly Islamic Pakistan.

The HRCP reported 93 minors and seven Christians among those who were murdered.

"Women were sometimes killed in the name of 'honor' over property disputes and inheritance rights," the commission said.

Nearly 600 of the women killed were accused of having "illicit relations," and more than 200 were murdered for marrying without permission.

Caleb Porter - interview

U.S. Under-23 national team Caleb Porter is one of the most highly-regarded young coaches in American soccer, and his appointment to lead the United States through Olympic Qualifying didn't come as much of a surprise to those familiar with his success at the University of Akron.

Ives Galarcep interviews Porter on his philosophies of the game-

ON THE STYLE OF SOCCER HE TEACHES

"I’m a guy that never wants to go into a game and sit back and wait and worry and wonder and hang on,” Porter said. “I want to go at teams and I want my players to be confident when they go onto a field."

“I want them to be creative. I want them to have the ball."

"It’s built around possession of the ball and ball retention. Approximately 75 percent of the time the team with more possession wins the game."

"It’s not a style that’s hard to get guys to buy into, everyone wants the ball. What’s hard is getting them to be effective with it."

"We have a lot of technical players and I think by encouraging them to play you’ll see their technical qualities and creativity come out even more than you may even realize with some of these guys.

"I don’t think you have to have 11 guys that are world class to do it,” Porter said. “If you can coach it the right way, and if you can get your players to buy into playing one and two touch, and work on movement and combination play, and buy into pressing, it can be done."

ON THE ORIGINS OF HIS STYLE OF PLAY

"I’ve always liked pressing. When I was at Indiana (University) we were always a pressing team and I always felt like that’s why we're so confident as a team. It gives you a spirit and belief that when you press and disrupt an opponent."

"I start watching Barcelona three or four years ago and really, really studying them and it was like the a-ha moment. I thought in my mind that I wanted to put out a style that was pressing, but also attack-oriented with a lot of rhythm and creativity, and Barcelona was playing a perfect version of that.

"It’s the possession and the pressure, the combination of the two. Obviously they’re very talented too."

ON HIS STYLE'S SUCCESS ON THE COLLEGE LEVEL

"I implemented that philosophy at Akron and some people thought it was probably too ambitious for college soccer. Here we are, trying to play the beautiful game and playing hybrid systems and build out of the back and use my goalkeeper. Hopefully I’ve proven it can happen."

"It develops players and it's hopefully a way of doing things that can help grow the sport in this country."

"I won championships at Indiana, and so for me when I went to Akron it wasn’t going to just be good enough to win championships. I wanted to win in a way that would actually raise the bar and develop players, grow the sport and get other college coaches to follow our lead and see that you can win in college soccer with an attractive, attack-oriented approach."

Dutch Citizens Must Now Be at Least 18 to Marry; Marriages Between Cousins Will Need Approval

The Dutch News website reports that Dutch ministers today (March 23, 2012) agreed to stop the under 18-year-old residents in the Netherlands from getting married.

Marriages between cousins will also be made more difficult, and both parties will have to prove no compulsion is involved before getting official approval.

Ministers also want to limit the acceptance of polygamous marriages carried out abroad, by only granting one partner residency permit per household.

Polygamy -- allowing men to have more than one wife -- is already banned in the Netherlands.

ADL Study: Anti-Semitism Is Increasing in Europe; Hungary, Spain, Poland Most Anti-Semitic Nations

The Huffington Post website reports today (March 22, 2012) that -- just days after a lone gunman murdered a rabbi and three children at a Jewish school in Toulouse, France -- a new study reports widespread anti-Semitism in France and across Europe.

The study -- completed in January and released yesterday by the New York-based Anti-Defamation League (ADL) -- finds that 24 percent of the French population holds anti-Semitic views, up from 20 percent in 2009.

About half a million Jews live in France -- the largest number of Jews in any western European nation -- which is less than one percent of France's population.

The study found particularly high levels of anti-Semitism in three European nations -- Hungary, Spain, and Poland -- which demand a serious response from political, religious, and civic leaders in those nations, according to Abraham Foxman, ADL national director.

UGCC Head Says Russian Church Aided Stalin; Wants Russian Orthodox Church to Admit Its Role

The Catholic Culture website reports today (March 22, 2012) that ecumenical relations between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) are being stymied because the Moscow patriarchate will not admit its culpability for cooperating with the Stalinist regime, says Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk.

The leader of the UGCC -- which suffered brutal persecution during the Stalin era -- said that the Russian Orthodox should acknowledge their role in that historic era.

The UGCC leader said that the Moscow patriarchate's unwillingness to acknowledge moral responsibility for cooperating in the persecution is "a serious obstacle to the development of mutual relations."

The Moscow patriarchate insists that tensions in Ukraine are caused primarily by the activity of the UGCC, which is interfering in the "canonical territory" of the Moscow patriarchate.

French Killer Mohammed Merah Killed by Police; Killed Rabbi, 3 Jewish Kids and 3 French Troops

Mohammed Merah -- the 23-year-old French Muslim gunman who killed seven people recently in the city of Toulouse in southwest France -- is dead after being shot in the head by a police sniper during a final dramatic shootout with French police, the Yahoo News website reports today (March 22, 2012).

It was the culmination of a 31-hour standoff with hundreds of French anti-terror police who had surrounded the building where Merah had barricaded himself.

Merah claimed responsibility for killing three young schoolchildren and their rabbi teacher at a Jewish school in Toulouse, and three French paratroopers of North African descent.

Merah cited the death of Palestinian children in Gaza, and opposition to France's role in the NATO peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan, as the reason for targeting Jewish schoolchildren and French troops.

Mary Gibney Artist and Collector Mugshots and the Library

One of the tenents of librarianship is privacy. It's why I love librarians...you can ask them ANYTHING and they won't spill the beans. Privacy, the right which we have almost given away for free (witness the growth of Facebook, where one is asked to indicate their "status" on a minute by minute basis for advertisers and anyone else, including divorce lawyers, to plunder). Trust me, all those status updates will come back and chew you a new one someday.

Librarians used to only very, very reluctantly give up circulation records to the feds, even Oswald's! But today folks willingly click "I am reading so and so" instead of keeping their knowledge quests private. For librarians, a noble profession with noble rules, intellectual freedom was paramount.

For decades the only bugaboo in the library privacy record was the checkout card. Anyone could see who else read the book, or at least carried it home. My mother, herself a junior high librarian in her day, used to say every book she checked out had my name on the card. He said modestly. Eh...there were no books about Marxism in the junior high anyway, I found those in high school. Today, I am trying hard to fill my kindle so I can justify buying the new one.

These lovely relics come to me from artist Mary Gibney, and they come with a good story. I received an email from Mary about my recent post of mug shots. It is always nice to receive notes with comments and such, but this one was different. It came from an artist who PAINTS mug shots! I can get behind that...how many cool ideas are left, after all? Mary Gibney found one, and she is doing a good job with it.

Ms. Gibney and I exchanged a few pleasantries, and that she had this collection of library checkout cards came up...so I finagled a few for the blog. They are lovely and odd, and I can't thank Mary enough for sharing. She also has an overdue notice for Victorian potboiler "The Magnificent Ambersons" which is surprising as the filmed version is so, so much better. At least the first three minutes of it. (Seriously!) Why anyone would struggle with the book when an Orson Welles masterpiece is available is beyond me.

I have also cribbed a handful of Gibney's splendid mug shot work. She really deserves a post of her own here, and one day I hope to.

Gibney has a long exhibition history HERE and seems to be doing quite well selling her work. As you can see, the mugshots are done of both celebs and regular mugs, and she has also done a series of works based on the faces shot by Weegee.
Gibney is a Minneapolis artist, cyclist, library worker (ah HA!) and collector of odd objects, scraps and castoffs. As becomes an artist, she has a statement.

"I rely on intuition, mixing up, shapely objects, found bits and ephemera, the arcane and the obsolete, mistakes and fortunate convergences. I am fascinated by mugshots, anonymous faces and abandoned photos which I use to make portraits of unknown people. Other inspirations are maps, children's encyclopedia illustrations, paint color chips, sideshow art and theatrical illusions, old toys and unnecessary objects, handwritten signs, ads from old Popular Mechanics and Ladies Home Journals and mid-20th century illustrations of the wonderful future."

Review Film The Woman in Black

COMMENTARY: Nurses Who Murdered 16 Patients in Uruguay Need Lifetime Prison Sentences

It was revealed this week that two male nurses are facing murder charges in Uruguay, after they admitted killing at least 16 patients in two hospitals in Montevideo, the capital of that South American nation.

The two men appeared to have acted independently of each other. Authorities are also charging a woman as being an accomplice in at least one of the killings.

The nurses said they killed the patients because they did not want to see them suffer; however, one of the patients killed had his discharge order signed one day before his death. The nurses killed the patients by administering a morphine overdose or by injecting air bubbles into their blood stream.

The fact is that the nurses -- as well as the accomplice -- have no right whatsoever to kill any patient, regardless of how much a patient may be suffering. God -- and God alone -- must decide when it is time for a patient to die.

This situation in Uruguay brings back memories of the late Dr. Jack Kavorkian -- or "Dr. Death" as he was nicknamed -- and his suicide assistance to Americans who did not want to live any longer. Dr. Kavorkian received a lengthy prison sentence in Michigan for his deadly assistance.

The murderous nurses in Uruguay -- called "Angels of Death" in that country -- as well as the murderous accomplice must also receive a lengthy prison sentence. Indeed, they should receive a lifetime prison sentence, with no possible parole.

Wisconsin Woman Sentenced to 3 Years in Prison; Convicted of Stealing $400,000 from Cath. Church

The Christian Broadcast Network website reports today (March 21, 2012) that a Milwaukee, Wisconsin woman -- convicted of embezzling $400,000 from the Catholic Church where she worked -- has been sentenced to three years in prison.

Darlene Vodvarka pleaded guilty last month to two charges of felony theft. Her sentence yesterday included an order to pay back the money within the next five years.

Before her sentencing, the 57-year-old read a statement tearfully apologizing to St. Matthew's parish and to her family.

She told the judge that she does not have a drug or gambling problem, and that she used most of the money on her family.

US Commission Rebukes Rel. Freedom in Russia; Finds Russia Intolerant of Non-Orthodox Religions

The Big News Network website reports today (March 21, 2012) that a U.S. government commission on religious freedom has included Russia in a list of countries that require "close monitoring."

The annual report of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has included Russia due to concerns about extremism, treatment of non-traditional religions, and hate crimes.

The USCIRF report states, "In the past year (2011), the Russian government increased its use of anti-extremism legislation against religious groups and individuals not known to use or advocate violence."

It adds, "Russian officials continue to deem certain religious and other groups alien to Russian culture and society, thereby contributing to a climate of intolerance." The vast majority of Russians adhere to the Greek Orthodox faith.

Planned Parenthood Guest: OK If Teens Have Sex; Urges Parents Let Teens Have Sex in Their Homes

The Life Site News website reports today (March 20, 2012) that a featured speaker at a Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernadino Counties (California) luncheon last week suggested that parents allow their teenage children to have sex in their home.

Dr. Amy Schalet -- an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst -- said American parents should be more like parents in the Netherlands, who allow teenagers to have sex openly under their roof.

"In the Netherlands, if a girl is in a relationship, she's not a slut for wanting sex," she said.

Schalet -- who spent part of her life in the Netherlands -- said Dutch parents consider children ready for intercourse at the age of 16.

Nurses in Uruguay Arrested for "Mercy Killings;" Sixteen Patients Killed "to End Their Suffering"

Police in Uruguay have arrested two male nurses -- who are suspected of killing at least 16 elderly patients -- in two hospitals in the South American nation's capital, Montevideo, the Eurasia Review website reports today (March 20, 2012).

According to an investigation, the two nurses -- aged 38 and 49 -- knew one another but acted independently. They claimed that they killed their victims "out of pity to end their suffering."

Authorities have also charged a female nurse as being an accomplice in at least one of the murders.

The suspects -- dubbed "Angels of Death" by the local media -- killed their victims by giving them lethal injections of air or morphine.

Jimmy Carter: It's Fine for Gays to Be Married; "Jesus Never Said a Word about Homosexuality"

The Raw Story website reports today (March 20, 2012) that former President Jimmy Carter -- in an interview with The Huffington Post last night regarding his faith -- expressed his approval of same-sex marriage.

"Homosexuality was well-known in the ancient world, well before Christ was born, and Jesus never said a word about homosexuality," Carter said. "In all of His teachings about multiple things -- He never said that gay people should be condemned. I personally think it is very fine for gay people to be married in civil ceremonies."

The 39th American president also said, "I draw the line in requiring by law that churches must marry people."

He added, "I'm a Baptist, and I believe that each congregation is autonomous and can govern its own affairs. So if a local Baptist Church wants to accept gay members on an equal basis -- which my church does by the way -- then it is fine. If a church decides not to, then government laws shouldn't require them to."

Good Hope Baptist Church No website

There are numerous Good Hope Baptist Churches, of course, and some of them seem to have state of the art, big budget websites...but somehow I think I would be more comfortable in this place having a chat with the preacher and learning a few things.

Review Film I Don't Know How She Does It

Sesuai judulnya, I Don't Know How She Does It.

COMMENTARY: NY Times' Double Standard on Religion Violates Freedom of the Press

The New York Times last week published an ad purchased by an atheist organization titled "It's Time to Consider Quitting The Catholic Church."

But when another organization tried to buy a similar ad against Islam, the newspaper refused to publish it, thus illustrating that The York Times has a double standard on religion.

The Times published the anti-Catholic ad -- purchased by the atheistic Freedom From Religion Foundation -- which challenged Roman Catholic beliefs and pointed to the church's past sex scandals, among other things, as reasons for Catholics to leave their church.

On the other hand, The Times did not publish an ad that Pamela Geller -- president of Stop Islamization of Nations -- tried to have published titled "It's Time To Quit Islam."

It is a sad day for America's freedom of the press when the nation's third largest circulating daily newspaper -- after The Wall Street Journal and USA Today -- decides it is unfit to publish one religious ad, even though it just published another religious ad that was very similar.

Ironically, The New York Times is violating its own long-standing motto of "All the news that's fit to print" by printing an ad criticizing one religion, but refusing to print another ad criticizing another religion.

The fact is that The New York Times -- as a result of its discriminatory and biased policy in this situation -- has now been stigmatized and has lost the respect it once commanded from a plethora of Americans.

Indeed, it will take many years before The New York Times can possibly regain the respect it previously had for being an objective and unbiased newspaper, as it circulates in our great freedom-loving nation.

Then, again, The New York Times may never regain that respect!

Egypt Coptic Orth. Christian Pope Shenouda Dies; Shenouda III Was Head of 12 Million Christians

Egyptian Coptic Orthodox Christian Pope Shenouda III -- the patriarch of most of Egypt's estimated 12 million Christians -- died today (March 17, 2012) from old age, his political adviser told the Reuters website.

Bells tolled in Cairo's Abbasiya district -- site of Egypt's main Coptic Orthodox cathedral -- as the news spread.

Shenouda, 88, became the 117th Pope of Alexandria in 1971, and was popular among Egypt's Christians and Muslims alike during his four decades in power.

His successor -- who has not yet been named -- will play a central role in forging the church's position in the country after the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak last year. Islamist political parties have since swept parliamentary elections and will dominate the debate over drawing up Egypt's new constitution.

Former Nazi Guard Demjanjuk Dies in Germany; Convicted of Killing 28,000 Jews During WW II

The Reuters website reports that John Demjanjuk -- convicted last year for his role in killing 28,000 Jews at a Nazi death camp during World War II -- died today (March 17, 2012) at the age 91 in a care home in southern Germany.

A Munich court convicted Ukrainian-born Demjanjuk in May 2011 of helping to kill the Jews at the Sobibor death camp in Nazi-occupied Poland. He was sentenced to five years in prison but freed because of his age.

The Bavarian police said in a statement that Demjanjuk had died at the care home near Rosenheim -- south of Munich -- where he had been living.

Demjanjuk was extradited to Germany from his home in the United States in 2009 to stand trial. He attended the 18-month court proceedings in Munich -- the birthplace of Adolf Hitler's Nazi movement -- in a wheelchair and sometimes lying down. He denied the charges against him, but otherwise did not speak at his trial.

Review Film Monte Carlo

Judge Rules in Favor of St. Louis Polish Parish; Rules It Can Control Its Own Assets and Property

The Christian Broadcast Network website reports today (March 16, 2012) that a court has ruled that a predominantly Polish parish in St. Louis can control its own assets and property, thus giving it a long-sought victory over the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. Louis.

Judge Bryan Hettenbach yesterday decided in favor of St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church.

St. Stanislaus pastor, Marek Bozek, says he hopes the decision opens the way for new dialogue with the Catholic Church.

The archdiocese said it plans to appeal yesterday's ruling.

New York Times Has Double Standard on Religion; Runs Ad Bashing Catholics, Not on Bashing Islam

The Fox News website reports today (March 16, 2012) that the New York Times is being accused of having a double standard when it comes to questioning religion, after it ran an ad calling on Catholics to leave their church, but refused to run an ad making the same plea to Muslims.

The newspaper published an ad from the Freedom From Religion Foundation -- an atheist organization -- on March 9, which asked Catholics, "why send your children to parochial schools to be indoctrinated into the next generation of obedient donors and voters?"

But when Pamela Geller -- executive director of Stop Islamization of America -- offered the same $39,000 for the newspaper to run an ad making a similar appeal to Muslims, it refused to do so.

"This shows the hypocrisy of the New York Times .... and its willingness to kowtow to violent Islamic supremacist intimidation," Geller said.

Abp. of Canterbury Says He Will Retire in Dec.; Will Take on a Senior Role at Cambridge Univ.

The Archbishop of Canterbury Dr. Rowan Williams -- head of the Anglican Church -- announced today (March 16, 2012) that he will be stepping down from his position at the end of December, and take on the role as Master of Magdalene College, a senior position at Cambridge University.

"It has been an immense privilege to serve as Archbishop of Canterbury over the past decade, and moving on has not been an easy decision," Williams said in a statement.

Although the normal retirement age for Church of England bishops is 70, Williams, 61, is believed to be stepping down early due mainly to the turbulent time being experienced in the Anglican Church, amid debates about same-sex marriage and women priests.

Dr. John Sentamu -- the Archbishop of York -- has been named as the favorite for succeeding Dr. Williams, which would make him the first Black Anglican leader in history.

Vintage Crime and Criminals Black Gangsters of the 1950s Mug Shots of New York Collection Jim Linderman

Real Black Gangsters, I guess. Criminals from the 1950s, but presumed innocent until proven otherwise. I'm not kidding one bit. Given attitudes, practices and institutional racism from 50 plus years ago, these sharp-dressers might have been just walking to work.

Striking Photographs, each near 8" x 10" and each handed back and forth from lawyers, prosecutors, file clerks and now collectors. Another reminder that the photograph used to be a physical object which developed surface, wear and form as it aged.

Italian Group Condemns Dante's "Divine Comedy;" Finds Poem Racist, Wants It Banned from Schools

The Big News Network website reports today (March 15, 2012) that a research group has said that Dante Alighieri's "Divine Comedy" -- an epic poem about travels through hell and heaven -- was racist and against Islam, and should be banned from schools in Italy.

"The 'Divine Comedy' is the pillar of Italian literature and a cornerstone of Italian literature, and the educational formation of the country's students," said Valentina Sereni, president of Gherush92, an anti-racism group that works for the United Nations.

"Students are taught the work's offensive and discriminatory language without any filter," she added.

Dante wrote the "Divine Comedy" between 1308 and his death in 1321 while in exile from Florence. In the epic poem, Dante's alter ego Pilgrim travels through hell, purgatory, and heaven -- and even meets God along the way.

COMMENTARY: U.S. Flag Must Not Be Desecrated with a Picture

Veterans' groups and many other Americans became infuriated this week -- and rightly so -- after seeing an American flag with a picture of President Barack Obama in place of the flag's stars.

The flag was flying at the Democratic headquarters in Lake County, Florida, but was removed on March 13, as a result of several complaints about the flag's desecration by American veterans.

The Democratic Party -- or whatever organization was responsible for this flag desecration -- should know better than that. Thousands of Americans have lost their lives in several wars, in order to allow Americans to continue to enjoy the freedom and justice that is symbolized by the American flag.

To put a picture of President Obama on the American flag -- in place of the flag's stars -- is doing an injustice to the flag and everything it represents. To add insult to injury in this situation, President Obama has never even served a day of active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Many Americans can still recall and praise a picture of the American flag about to be flown on the island of Iwo Jima during World War II -- more than 65 years ago -- as four or five American troops worked together diligently to insert that flag pole in the ground on that Japanese island.

On the other hand, a picture of President Obama on a flag tends to remind a person of flags with pictures honoring -- and even worshiping -- Adolph Hitler, Josef Stalin, and other famous dictators and mass murderers.

The American flag, then, must be observed and respected as a true symbol of the freedom, liberty, and justice that we are indeed fortunate to enjoy in the United States. It must never be desecrated with a picture of the president of the United States -- or anyone else for that matter.

Vets Furious Over US Flag with Obama's Picture; One Veteran Compares It to Flags of Stalin, Hitler

The Drudge Report website reports today (March 14, 2012) that an American flag in Lake County, Florida -- which features a picture of President Obama in place of the stars -- was taken down from the Lake County Democratic headquarters yesterday afternoon, after a furious veterans' group called it an outrage.

Korean War veteran Don Van Beck said his blood was boiling. "I can't describe how upset I was because you just don't do that to the American flag," Van Beck said.

Marine Corps veteran John Masterjohn was seeing red. "Joseph Stalin, pictures of Mao, pictures of Adolph Hitler. The pomp, the ceremony -- the flags like that," Masterjohn said.

"If you've been a veteran and fought -- and some died for this flag -- you don't want to see it desecrated. That's how simple it is," Van Beck said.

San Francisco Drug Users Union Meets Regularly; Demands Voice In Decisions Affecting Drug Users

The Washington Times website reports today (March 14, 2012) that drug users -- and even some men and women who now are drug-free -- convene regularly in San Francisco's Tenderloin district to discuss public health policy and share their experiences.

The San Francisco Drug Users Union -- one of a few such groups in the United States -- was established to demand a voice "in decision-making processes that affect our lives."

In the coming months, members of the San Francisco group plan to testify before a city panel on housing discrimination.

The group will also co-host the first conference in the U.S. by and for drug users.

Jim Linderman Interview in The Bund Chinese Lifestyle, Art, Fashion Magazine

The Bund is a beautiful (TRULY beautiful) High-fashion / style / art / lifestyle weekly magazine published in Shanghai, China, and you will most certainly be surprised if you take the time to browse the current online edition HERE. The Jim Linderman interview is HERE in the issue of March 15, 2012. The circulation of The Bund has grown to 450,000 paid subscribers, and a flip though the online edition will show why. Lovely!

Niea Gu, Senior Fashion Editor did the with interview considerable grace and style.

Some of the introductory material was adapted from the recent New York Times article of 2/12/02, and the interview portion follows along with samples of things I have discussed in the blogs over the years. The Article translation (which is simply charming...what can I say?) follows based on the Google translate service. I have discovered some striking phrases from the translation I could not have created on my own but love, and believe me, this is one of the greatest honors of my life.

This is also a true experiment for me. I have no idea how many citizens will read this or have access to it. But it is lovely, fascinating and splendid. That I am able to play even this very, very small part of bringing together two great lands is an honor I never thought would be possible. Thank You The Bund. I am truly honored.

POP CULTURE MINER (Introductory Text based in NYT article)

Jim Linderman, may be the world's coolest book file administrator. Although he has retired, but looking for something, and his ability to still no one can, and still bored. His collection of all the bits and pieces of American folk art and popular culture, they are popular enough, but also interesting enough. Tens of thousands of his collections, as large as sculpture, as small as a postcard, all cheap. As he himself puts it: "I have no money to buy Andy Warhol, so I'm always looking for the poor 'Warhol,'.

Jim Linderman, accustomed to get up early every day, give yourself a cup of coffee, then turn on the computer to update the blog. He wrote not a morning news current affairs reporting or celebrity gossip, but those old, forgotten the wonderful things. Mr. 58-year-old Linderman is an art collector, most recently, his achievements even by the attention and coverage of the New York Times. He was living the small town of Lake Michigan, Grand Haven, when the lifetime of the Book File Manager. Identity mix sounds a little strange, and his collection: a variety of interesting bits and pieces of American folk art and popular culture. "I always collect a number of unusual, strange things do not fly." He said.

In 2008, he has set up three blog - Dull, Tool Dim Bulb, the Old Time Religion and the Vintage Sleaze - used to display and describe their favorites. As an all-encompassing network flea market is full of novelty is convulsed amazed found. On the blog, he will dig out the story behind every piece of the collection, and his right, as if a magical secret passageway leading to the past for the reader to open.

Mr. Linderman, the blog is always an unexpected manner makes an eye-opener, for example, you know the pianist in the 1930s Baldy Wetzel, a record 48.5 hours of uninterrupted play record? Have you ever heard advertised himself as "hated woman world champion in the 1940s folk artists Albion, Clough,? Have you ever seen American porn comic Tijuana, Bibles "(Tijuana Bible).? As a senior File Manager, he loves books and writing in the past three years, he not only write a blog every day, also published a book of 14 content, the majority of their own money to publication. His latest book is called "the mysterious old photos (Vintage Photographs in of arcane Americana), a collection of his collection" the most bizarre photos ", such as the ventriloquism strippers. While his most famous publication was undoubtedly the 2009 Grammy Best Historical Album "nomination" take me to go in the water "(Take Me to the Water), although the book is only a thin 95, but a collection of 75 old photos of Christian water baptism scene, but also comes with an old gospel song LP.

Linderman Mr. lived in Manhattan for 28 years until 2008, was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) before deciding to move out of New York with his wife, Jenna, back to his hometown of Grand Haven breath of fresh air. Since then, he started writing a blog, in his words, "In order to give myself a bunch of digital footprint."

1980 the beginning of the year to Manhattan, Mr. Linderman, the first job is an international The discography finishing rock punk kind of music, and later worked in CBS's "60 Minutes" program and the evening news, as well as the BBDO advertising agency as file tidying up. Spare time, he launched an extraordinary collection of career. He has hundreds of Bob Dylan's private system of records, a few thousand copies of the book of John - John F. Kennedy assassination conspiracy theory. Dylan's fans, President Kennedy, he fell does not care who is assassinated. "I just love the books of such print-out in her garage. Those guys interested in UFOs, will also discuss the JFK incident but then no one will go to collect their masterpiece." He said.

In particular, he favored the self-taught artists, especially in the mostly South American artists and African artists. He gave the South African artist Howard Finster, write to discuss the painting, the other replied, "OK, ah, please send sheets check over." So he sent a check for $ 10, then really received a painting. He went to the southern United States Travel, met a lot of crazy and interesting painter, they put in front of his house to sell the painting, he was almost accept. "I have no money to buy Andy Warhol, so I'm always looking for the poor 'Warhol,'". He said.

Comical collectors
Mr. Linderman three blog "Vintage Sleaze" is the most popular. This blog is mainly a poster girl on his collecting research on the 1950s and 1960s male publications. Camera Club Girl "(Camera Club, Girls), a book, he tells the Harlem jazz singer Cass Carr anecdotes - in the early 1950s, she has organized a bold outdoor photo tour, participating members, including designed to beat the legendary crime scene photographer Weegee, and the wound has not yet been made a star of "Playboy" magazine sexy stunner of Bettie Page. Later, this group of people caught in a farm in suburban New York when shooting is to photograph the nude was illegal.

These little-known variety of baby from where? Mr. Linderman said that he usually drove to the not too far away from home more than a dozen antique market, see the story of stuff "will be shot. He also frequents eBay, looking for photos and prints, especially useful. Old photos of the Christian water baptism mentioned previously, almost all from eBay Go to flea markets to find a photo, you have to turn one year old shoebox. "He said on eBay may be a month will be able to procure. He collected all kinds of strange objects: "Diddley Bow" (a structure like stringed guitar, West African homemade blues musical instruments), hand-made slingshots, toy bulldozers, antique kimonos, Indian raw leather small bag ... once fell in love with a things, he will be blown out, until one day are tired, it sold, traded or donated out, and then find a new target. Before you move out of New York, Mr. Linderman, his collection of religious baptism photo, left Manhattan International Center of Photography last year, the latter on this theme organized an exhibition. He donated a Victorian-style slide is also the center included in the exhibition program. Center for Brian Wallis' praise in visual culture, "he has done is unprecedented, he excavated treasures at the edge of the popular culture, which requires a collect talent, but he is the world's greatest collection. always pay attention to strange things, and constantly come up with fun new ideas. "

When asked about favorite era", Mr. Linderman, said, "This is really a strange question to me and everyone else can not do without the Internet. "Today, his blog click-through rate has been close to 2 million, which was unimaginable before the arrival of the digital age. "Of course, I miss the past years are sincere and reliable," he then said, "We always appreciate losing before, so we really should take the time to appreciate those around simple small things, because one day, they will disappear. technology is very beautiful, but a child, my night to listen to the radio very happy, and now the same child is afraid I do not think so, they have much choice ... However, I still think radio great. "

Whew! Interview follows:

B = "Bund"
 J.L = Jim Linderman
B: You also wrote three blog, why? JL: I first began to write Dull, Tool, Dim Bulb, used to share my collection of strange photos and articles, this blog open for four years, has been updated over 1000. I will be regarded as the main blog, even though the other two seem to be more popular. Then I opened the Old-Time Religion, every Saturday night, I would choose a religion class from Dull, Tool, Dim Bulb, strange pictures posted up. Because over the weekend in the United States, some people are used to "crazy one", then go to church on Sunday morning repentance some. So I started on Saturday night posted one and church-related photos, so those guys wake up the next morning you can see, gradually developed into a new blog, a book. Dull, Tool, Dim Bulb original intention is to demonstrate to those who have been forgotten art form, unusual creation and the United States in the past some odd figure. Every now and then, I will introduce some of my respected artists and photographers, almost every one will be coupled with after years of a strange collection of articles or photos. I think, to write something it is necessary to its familiar enough with the job, is to personally in his hand playing experience. This is also my blog and other blog differences, I wrote every thing can be found shoebox yard behind me. Vintage Sleaze is a late start, but it is the highest page views. I found his collection there are many old photos of the "immoral", similar to the 1950s, men to buy sexy magazine. This is a category of popular culture rarely documented mention of everyone's basement can be dug out a few, but very few talk about. So I think the Vintage Sleaze to show their comical, although sexy, but also harmless, but also reveals some silly. Subscribe to this blog's women less than men, which made me very proud. 50 years ago "dirty pictures" very cute, and do this trip - those models, illustrators, writers, publishers - also very interesting, they walk the edge of the law, doing challenging and the sense of accomplishment. Every time I write their stories, laugh at least once. I like the challenge.

B: How often updated blog? JL: I as far as possible every day at least update a blog, sometimes three will be updated. Write an article or photo, I want to investigate for several days. I tried to proceed from each photo or article, write a thesis on the history. I work with a humorous tone to write. I like the ease and the pursuit of serious and precise at the same time, entertainment is also very important. I try to like reporters to remain objective, but occasionally melt into his own point of view. I always hope that your article can become a starting point of the in-depth study of other scholars. All these years I dig out the thousands of stories, I think every one deserves to be written in a book. Someday, the scholars will be curious about who this guy write Dull, Tool, Dim Bulb! Than a writer, I also see themselves as a visual artist, of course, have to depend on the readers' opinions.
B: Your collection must be very considerable, they account for where it is? JL: they just seem more than is good, because most of them are photos and paper, not of space. My house has not been large, but in good order. The collection is concentrated in a small room, one of the few big-ticket items (such as sculpture and handmade furniture) are placed into the garage or basement, all these years, many of the big guy has been I sold, replaced, or otherwise share out. I used to put a few special things in their own front, I like to see them at any time. The thing is not necessarily the bigger the better, little things often a vast reservoir of energy.
B: your collection is to spend money? JL: my life is a book file manager, no money. My favorites is the sense of smell, not like a child is eight by collectors as no money, but also buy the "excellent" work of art. I want to prove that everyone can gather to wonderful things, many small stones, and many nest, or transistor radios. Anything, as long as you allow them to became a scale through a lot, organize and share, they allow others to see their beauty, this is the collection. Although the whole process very time-consuming, but it does not cost money.

B: You grew like to collect things? JL: Yes, like any little boy, I also collect stamps and baseball cards, but then I made a solemn decision: a collection of things that others do not collection! It makes me feel different, I once again received attention for those who have been forgotten and ignored.
B: Do you think the librarian how the job? JL: I like the librarian job is that it allows me to be made now, this is one of the most remarkable career. A good librarian can equally help to anyone, regardless of the guests what to look for books, he can provide the services without the subjective judgment, encountered the controversial subject matter, he would know how to take into account, always harbor respected. Librarian every day to learn new knowledge, and ability to use their knowledge to help others people great satisfaction.
B: Do you collect things related to American popular culture, in this field who idolized? JL: I love Bob Dylan, because he was well received by the image of American culture. I also appreciate the southern United States, a painter named David Bates, depicting rural America a huge work, bright colors, humorous, and full of respect. However, the majority of my collection are anonymous works, the author has long been time to annihilation. I especially like the amateur for, like all mortal beings. From one work to dig out a piece of history or an artist is a great sense of accomplishment.
